Department of the History of Medicine
The Department of the History of Medicine (School of Public Health) is a scientific unit that conducts educational and research activities aimed at promoting and expanding historical knowledge concerning the development of Polish and global medicine throughout the centuries.
Educational activities
As part of its educational activities, the School of Public Health conducts:
- Lectures during specialization courses organized by the School of Public Health and the School of Medical Sciences at the Centre of Postgraduate Medical Education in the field of medical history, especially public health, nephrology, and dialysis therapy.
- Preparation and administration of medical history exams for doctoral students from the CPME, Children’s Memorial Health Institute, Institute of Experimental and Clinical Medicine of the Polish Academy of Sciences, and the Military Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology.
- Publications in Polish and international medical journals.
- Lectures at scientific and training conferences in Poland and abroad.
- Collaboration with other departments of the School of Public Health.
Scientific activities
The main research interests of the Department include:
- History of nephrology, renal replacement therapy, and other medical disciplines.
- The impact of Polish physicians on the development of European medicine.
- Patrons of clinical hospitals and medical universities.
- History of vaccination.
- Polish physicians from the Renaissance period.
- Medicine of the 19th century.
- Development of public health as a medical discipline.
Scientific cooperations
The Department of the History of Medicine cooperates with:
- Historical Section of the Polish Society of Nephrology, where the Head of the Department has served as secretary since 2018.
- International Association for the History of Nephrology (IAHN) (the Head of the Department has been Editor-in-Chief of the IAHN Newsletter since 2017).
- Department of Nephrology, School of Postgraduate Education in Nephrology, University of Padua, Italy.
- Main Medical Library in Warsaw.
- Faculty of History, University of Warsaw.
