Department of Epidemiology and Population Health

The Department of Epidemiology and Population Health is a research unit that focuses on the early identification and prevention of population-level public health threats, as well as monitoring the health status of the Polish population based on epidemiological data. The results of scientific studies, analyses, and expert reports produced within the Department aim to provide robust evidence to support evidence-based health policy-making, in line with the evidence-based public health approach.

Key responsibilities of the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health:

• Conducting epidemiological research, with a particular emphasis on nationally representative population-based studies assessing the prevalence of non-communicable diseases and their risk factors;
• Performing analyses related to primary and secondary cancer prevention, with a specific focus on the effectiveness of screening programs and systemic cancer treatment;
• Developing research areas relevant to health policy-making in Poland and across Europe;
• Monitoring the health status of high-risk populations and the prevalence of socioeconomic determinants contributing to health inequalities;
• Identifying and mitigating population-level public health threats;
• Assessing the impact of environmental factors—particularly air pollution—on the health of the Polish population;
• Planning, implementing, and monitoring population-level interventions, including those delivered in cooperation with public administration bodies;
• Conducting international collaboration on multicentre epidemiological studies examining the health status of selected populations;
• Delivering educational and training activities.
