Department of Trauma and Orthopedic Surgery

The Department specializes in the treatment of injuries and post-traumatic complications of the lower limb. Our clinical activities are focused on advanced orthopedic procedures for lower limb conditions, including minimally invasive and robotic surgery as well as the use of augmented reality techniques. In the field of upper limb surgery, we perform elbow joint operations – reconstructions and joint replacements.

Educational activities

The Department runs year-round specialty training rotations, as well as postgraduate and specialty internships. Every year, we organize approximately 10 training courses, including:

  • Specialty courses – around 300 participants per year receive certificates (trauma of the musculoskeletal system, osteosynthesis and pelvic fracture treatment, shoulder, elbow and hand surgery, knee surgery)
  • Advanced training courses – about 50 participants per year (knee arthroscopy, patellar instability, periprosthetic fractures of the hip joint)

Scientific Activities

Currently, we are conducting 17 research projects, often in collaboration with leading centers in Poland and abroad. Our staff actively participate in national and international scientific conferences. Among our team are recipients of domestic and international fellowships, and five doctoral students are completing their dissertations.
Main research areas:

  • Minimally invasive techniques
  • Cartilage and meniscus reconstruction
  • Sports injuries
  • Joint-preserving surgery (osteotomies, meniscus transplantation, reconstructions)
  • Patellar dislocation
  • Vitamin D metabolism and gene polymorphisms
  • Treatment of calcaneal and knee fractures (projects supported by ABM grants)

Medical activities

Our treatment outcomes are comparable to the best centers worldwide. We have particular expertise in the management of contractures, partial and total joint replacements, and minimally invasive procedures. The radial head prosthesis developed in our Department (Prof. S. Pomianowski, in collaboration with Warsaw University of Technology) holds a European patent and CE certification, and its use extends beyond Poland.
We provide comprehensive diagnostics and treatment of orthopedic and post-traumatic conditions, including:

  • Hip and knee joint (arthroplasty, reconstruction, arthroscopy; both primary and revision procedures)
  • Ankle and foot (arthroscopy, reconstruction, arthroplasty)
  • Elbow joint (reconstruction, arthroplasty)
  • Surgery of the wrist and hand
  • Treatment of post-traumatic complications (contractures, bone healing disorders—including nonunion and malunion)
Scientific Collaborations

Our staff are active members of international and national scientific societies, including:

  • ESSKA (European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy)
  • ISAKOS (International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine)
  • EFORT
  • Polish Arthroscopy Society (PTA)
  • Polish Orthopaedic and Traumatological Society (PTOiTr)
  • Team for the Polish Arthroplasty Registry – Knee
