Department of Obstetrics, Perinatology and Neonatology

Department of Obstetrics, Perinatology and Neonatology, located at the Bielański Hospital in Warsaw, is a leading medical center in Poland specializing in comprehensive care for pregnant women and newborns. The clinic integrates clinical practice, education, and scientific research, offering the highest (tertiary) level of perinatal care. It provides medical support for both physiological and complicated pregnancies, including those complicated by chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and autoimmune diseases. The clinic is also a referral center for the diagnosis and management of high-risk pregnancies, including multiple pregnancies. As part of its clinical activities, the clinic offers advanced diagnostic procedures such as amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling, and cordocentesis, enabling early detection and treatment of fetal anomalies. It also provides a full range of intrauterine therapeutic interventions. Moreover, the clinic is recognized as a center of excellence in the management of cervical insufficiency during pregnancy.

Educational activities

Department provides postgraduate education for physicians specializing in obstetrics, gynecology, neonatology, and perinatology. It organizes numerous specialized and advanced training courses that enable participants to acquire practical skills and up-to-date medical knowledge. The Clinic also conducts classes at the CMKP Obstetric Simulation Laboratory, offering hands-on training in realistic clinical scenarios.

Scientific activities

Department is actively engaged in scientific research, focusing on maternal-fetal medicine, perinatology, and neonatology. Ongoing research projects address key areas such as preterm birth therapy, complications in multiple pregnancies, and preeclampsia. Collaboration with national and international research institutions enables the implementation of innovative solutions into clinical practice.

Medical activities

Department is one of the few centers in Poland that performs advanced intrauterine procedures, such as fetoscopy. Thanks to the expertise of its multidisciplinary team and state-of-the-art technical facilities, it is possible to carry out complex, life-saving interventions for the fetus before birth. Department also specializes in the management of high-risk pregnancies, including those complicated by preterm labor, fetal growth restriction, hypertension, diabetes, and multiple gestations.

Scientific cooperations

The Department of Obstetrics, Perinatology and Neonatology at the Center of Postgraduate Medical Education is actively involved in both national and international research projects, collaborating with renowned scientific and clinical institutions. This collaboration includes, among others: the Institute of Mother and Child in Warsaw, the Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Medical Sciences at Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw, Leiden University Medical Center (Netherlands), the University of Liverpool (UK), the Informatics Institute and the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Physics at the University of Amsterdam, the University Medical Center of the University of Amsterdam (Netherlands), the Center for Advanced Medical Computing and Simulation at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School (USA), the Blood Pressure Clinic at King’s College Hospital, Harris Birthright Centre in London, the Medical University of Warsaw, the Medical University of Łódź, and the Amsterdam University Medical Center.

As a result of this interdisciplinary cooperation, Department has contributed to numerous publications in high-impact scientific journals and the implementation of new diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in clinical practice. Moreover, the Clinic plays an important role in developing and updating scientific society guidelines, contributing to the advancement and standardization of perinatal care in Poland.
